The safety and security of European economies, societies and citizens rely on space-based applications such as communication, navigation and observation. However, due to the growing complexity of the orbital environment, space-based assets are increasingly at risk from collision with other operational spacecraft or debris. At the same time, objects may re-enter and cause damage on the ground. To mitigate these risks, we need to be able to survey and track such objects, and to provide this information to a variety of stakeholders. The Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) Support Framework was established by the European Union in 2014 with the Decision 541/2014/EU of the European Parliament and the Council (SST Decision). This Decision foresaw the creation of an SST Consortium currently composed of seven EU Member States – France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Spain. An SST system is a network of ground-based and space-based sensors capable of surveying and tracking space objects, together with processing capabilities aiming to provide data, information and services on space objects that orbit around the Earth. Since 2016, the SST Consortium and the European Union Satellite Centre (SatCen) have worked together to develop a European SST capability, and formed the SST Cooperation. The Consortium’s Member States have networked their assets to provide, through the SST Service Provision Portal operated by SatCen, a set of SST services to all EU countries, EU institutions, spacecraft owners and operators, and civil protection authorities. The SST services assess the risk of in-orbit collisions and uncontrolled re-entry of space debris into the Earth’s atmosphere, and detect and characterise in-orbit fragmentations. The SST Consortium EU Member States are represented through their national designated entities: France (CNES), Germany (German Space Agency at DLR), Italy (ASI), Poland (POLSA), Portugal (PT MoD), Romania (ROSA) and Spain (CDTI).

EUROCONTROL Stakeholder Forum on noise-related operating restrictions at European airports
26 Jan 2023
EUROCONTROL
How are noise-related operating restrictions being implemented at European airports and how do they fit with air traffic growth? Although individual aircraft have become 75% less noisy over the last past 30 years, many EU citizens are still exposed to high noise levels around busy airports. To tackle this issue, the European Community adopted Regulation No N598/2014 in 2014, establishing a clear and transparent procedure to introduce operating restrictions so that decisions are evidence-based and offer optimal solutions for noise with regard to safety, capacity and costs. As restrictions also impact air carriers from non-EU countries, this regulation is also compliant with international principles on noise management, the so-called ICAO "Balanced Approach" which defines specific rules for assessing noise and the resulting required mitigation measures, with operating restrictions being a last resort. For this webinar, we have lined up key players representing the airport, State and airport community views. Together they will be helping us build a clearer picture of the noise-related measures which are currently under consideration or are already being implemented at certain EU airports, looking at their impact on operations at airport and European network levels as well as on communities, focusing on the engagement with local residents, and exploring the challenge of striking a balance between connectivity needs, economic aspects and health impacts.

Euro VII: A threat to European competitiveness and jobs
19 Jan 2023
ACEA
In this video, Martin Lundstedt, CEO of Volvo Group and Chair of ACEA’s Commercial Vehicles Board, flags the risk that Euro VII will slow down the decarbonisation of road transport. Bringing only an additional 2% reduction of NOx and particulate emissions, the impact of the proposed Euro VII regulation on air pollution is marginal. However, it risks slowing down the transition of the commercial vehicle industry to zero-emission vehicles, such as battery-electric and fuel-cell electric trucks and buses. “The North Star of the trucking industry should be the CO2 roadmap, which will also accelerate the reduction of NOx emissions and particulate matters,” Martin Lundstedt stated. With Euro VII, the industry will have to redirect tens of thousands of engineers back to the combustion engine, instead of continuing to invest its resources in broadening the scope of battery-electric and hydrogen-powered trucks. Ultimately, this norm will have the adverse effect of slowing down the industry efforts to reduce NOx and particulate matters emissions, as well as CO2 emissions. “It is a mistake; it will threaten European competitiveness and in the long run European jobs. We should go for the three instead: strengthening competitiveness, jobs and the right type of sustainability legislation,” Lundstedt said.

A series of live trials took place last summer to test FADE, a prototype for forecasting of ATFM delay evolution developed by our Innovation Hub in Brétigny, France as part of the EUROCONTROL Air Transport Innovation Network. FADE provides two delay-prediction indicators – ATFM delay evolution trend & predicted delay. For the trials, the tool was connected to the EUROCONTROL Network Manager operational system in the read-only mode and provided live data to 10 airlines: Air France, Transavia, SAS, Vueling, Swiss, Turkish Airlines, Wizz Air, KLM, Air Europa and easyJet. The objective was for airlines to assess the impact on their operations when using FADE indicators for decision making in their Operations Control Centres. After receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback, the next step is the handover for deployment by the Network Manager! Researchers have confirmed the presence of an exoplanet, a planet that orbits another star, using James Webb Space Telescope for the first time. Formally classified as LHS 475 b, the planet is almost exactly the same size as our own, clocking in at 99% of Earth’s diameter. Among all operating telescopes, only Webb is capable of characterising the atmospheres of Earth-sized exoplanets. The team attempted to assess what is in the planet’s atmosphere by analysing its transmission spectrum. Although the data show that this is an Earth-sized terrestrial planet, they do not yet know if it has an atmosphere. Webb also revealed that the planet is a few hundred degrees warmer than Earth, so if clouds are detected it may lead the researchers to conclude that the planet is more like Venus, which has a carbon dioxide atmosphere and is perpetually shrouded in thick cloud. 📹 @EuropeanSpaceAgency 🖥️ @NASA , ESA, @canadianspaceagency , L. space Hibernation | We research. You benefit.
Hibernation | We research. You benefit.
25 Jan 2023
European Space Agenc...
Did you know that ESA is researching human hibernation for long distance spaceflight to Mars or beyond? Hibernating astronauts could be the best way to save mission costs, reduce the size of spacecraft by a third and keep crew healthy on their way to Mars. An ESA-led investigation suggests that human hibernation goes beyond the realm of science-fiction and may become a game-changing technique for space travel. When packing for a return flight to the Red Planet, space engineers account for around two years’ worth of food and water for the crew. Torpor during hibernation is an induced state that reduces the metabolic rate of an organism. This ‘suspended animation’ is a common mechanism in animals who wish to preserve energy. Reducing the metabolic rate of a crew en route to Mars down to 25% of the normal state would dramatically cut down the amount of supplies and habitat size, making long-duration exploration more feasible. Mimicking therapeutic torpor, the idea of putting human into a state of hibernation, has been around in hospitals since the 1980s – doctors can induce hypothermia to reduce metabolism during long and complex surgeries. However, it is not an active reduction of energy and misses most of the advantages of torpor. Studies on hibernation to visit other planets could offer new potential applications for patient care on Earth. Animals hibernate to survive periods of cold and food or water scarcity, reducing their heart rate, breathing and other vital functions to a fraction of their normal life, while body temperature lowers close to ambient temperature. Tardigrades, frogs and reptiles are very good at it. Lower testosterone levels seem to aid long hibernation in mammals, estrogens in humans strongly regulate energy metabolism. With the crew at rest for long periods, artificial intelligence will come into play during anomalies and emergencies. The possibilities of hibernation for medical use is of particular interest to the European research community and could transform how we approach many severe illnesses. Inducing torpor is already used in some medical environments such as surgical theathers to replace anesthesia in those patients allergic to anesthetic drugs. The step to space research is closer than you might think. Get involved with spaceflight research via https://www.esa.int/spaceflightAO. EUROCONTROL Stakeholder Forum on noise-related operating restrictions at European airports
27 Jan 2023
