EUnited is the voice of machinery and equipment suppliers in Europe. We speak for the companies which make up the core of Europe’s advanced manufacturing capability. Our members design and develop specialist technology, systems and products which are used in our factories and our communities all over the world. We are Europe’s only direct company membership association and our sectors include Cleaning, Municipal Equipment, Robotics and Vehicle Cleaning.EUnited connects machinery and equipment companies in one association to improve awareness and understanding among decision-makers and policy actors in the European Union institutions. Equipment suppliers are the mainstay of advanced manufacturing, increasingly recognized as indispensable for basic needs from basic nutrition and other human needs such as employment. The supervision and regulation of manufacturing has always been a major political challenge. Today policy makers are contending with technological complex global supply chains and a hardening competitive context. The European Union has an important role in developing and optimizing the international regulatory and policy framework for manufacturing. The EU is increasingly called to arbitrate on environmental protection issues and propose proper regulation and practices. Informed decisions are crucial: manufacturing can be seen as a source of pollution, the cause of inequality or the principal menace to earth’s sustainability, but the same manufacturing industry is biggest employer, and produces pollution abatement as well as waste to energy solutions.

GAPP  is a 45 month Joint Action funded by the EU Health programme aiming at facilitating the development of a common and optimal approach to assess and authorize preparation processes in blood and tissues establishments (BEs and TEs), adapting requirements as prescribed by Article 29 of Directive 2002/98/EC and Article 28 of Directive 2004/23/EC .   This Joint Action will clearly contribute to the implementation of Union legislation in the fields of human tissues and cells, blood, providing tools and training to increase harmonisation of those MS activities that regulate the areas of blood transfusion, transplantation of tissues and cells and assisted reproduction, in strong abidance with art of Annex I of Regulation 282/2014. These are fields of healthcare that involve a considerable amount of movement of donated substances of human origin between MS and also movement of citizens between MS for treatment, particularly in the field of assisted ; Since the directives for these fields were adopted, significant technical developments have taken place and the complexity of preparation processes has greatly increased. Increasing complexity of processing can bring significant quality and functionality improvements for patients, and/or more efficient use of donations, but it can also bring increased risk, particularly as the level of complexity brings the final product towards the borderline with medicinal products. GAPP will ensure that any possible advantage or outcome is taken into account from two ongoing Public Health Programme projects focused on tissues and cells (EuroGTP II and ECCTR) incorporating a need for clinical follow-up data as part of a comprehensive process authorization. GAPP durable output is that a concept of a knowledge sharing platform on PPAs will be developed and fed in order to facilitate sharing of information among European Union, Competent Authorities and all EU CA inspectors and assessors will be trained specifically to assess and authorize preparation processes of tissues, cells, reproductive cells and blood products. Please visit GAPP website to download available documents.

The superior modulation bandwidth of laser diodes (LDs) makes them an ideal candidate for transmitters in optical wireless communication (OWC). One of the most important limitations in human-accessible environments is laser safety [1] which limits the transmission power and thereby coverage and range. The average LD power can be increased by means of optical components to reduce the power density or to increase the maximum permissible exposure (MPE). The power density is reduced by increasing the beam diameter and the emission angle 𝜃𝜃e to reduce the impinging optical power onto the human eye. The MPE is the limit value for the laser class defined by IEC 60825-1 [1]. Within certain limits, the MPE is influenced by the wavelength λ and the size of the apparent source. A large apparent source avoids sharp focus points on the retina. by Thiago Elias, Researcher PHD Student, Eindhoven University of Technology The Internet is not only accessed by computers and smartphones. With the rise to the Internet-of-Things (IoT), a very wide variety of smart objects can be connected to the Internet. Today, there are already billions of wearables, sensors, televisions, medical and industrial machines, and other devices. Moreover, many new data-hungry applications have been or are being developed, such as Virtual Reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), high-definition video streaming and Industry 4.0. The rapidly progressing technology greatly increases the flow of data across our wireless networks. In future, much larger traffic flows are expected, so this puts pressure on the development of communication systems that must satisfy the requirements of the new technologies used massively by the many users or by autonomous devices. https://owcc.jakajima.eu/ #owcc #opticalcommunications #LED #wireless #jakajimatv

Preparing for Floods: Adapting the Netherlands for Climate Resilience
27 Jan 2023
ESCI - European Scie...
In the IMPETUS project’s ‘Atlantic’ demonstration site in the Netherlands, our main goal is to align with national, regional and local programmes to enhance #climatechange adaptation measures. The team is developing digital #decisionsupportsystem tools for municipal spatial planners, so they can create sustainable cities and communities, with a focus on the city of Rotterdam and surrounding areas in Rijnmond and the province of Zeeland. One of the most significant challenges that climate change presents here is the increasing risk of #flooding from #sealevelrise. The sea has always been a threat for this low-lying country, which has been subject to major flooding events throughout its history. For example, the ‘Watersnoodramp’ of 1953 was a major disaster. And it is expected that, by 2050, regional sea level will rise 15-40 cm and there will be more severe #storms. More intense #rainfall and river flooding is another challenge, as summer floods in much more recent years have reminded us. With growing recognition that the Netherlands’ main protection – sea dikes and storm surge barriers – may no longer be sufficient in the face of climate change, the race is on for Dutch cities to take #climateaction and plan ahead with new strategies. Our #climateimpetus #project partner Nelen & Schuurmans is helping to accelerate climate adaptation measures in the Netherlands with its flooding decision support tool. Differentiated service delivery (DSD) has the potential to improve access to and uptake and effective use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention. Particularly during COVID-19, impressive adaptations were made to PrEP service delivery in many countries to ensure continued access as well as new initiations – highlighting the benefits of simplified and differentiated PrEP service delivery. This satellite showcased how a DSD approach to PrEP has expanded uptake and accelerated implementation in different contexts and populations.
