The EU Digital Services Act: Protecting us from dangerous goods and illegal content
Yesterday
DigitalEU
#DigitalEU #DSA #digitalservicesact Currently, there is no consistent flagging system for when you see illegal content, goods or services online. The DSA will make it easier for you to report illegal content, such as hate speech, and goods such as counterfeit products by introducing mandatory user-friendly flagging systems. Platforms will need to process alerts in a timely and diligent manner and keep you updated. You will also have clear information about whom you’re buying goods or services from online. ▬ About Digital EU ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG Connect) develops and implements policies to make Europe fit for the digital age. We invest in research, innovation, deployment and uptake of trustworthy and green digital technologies that improve our economy and people’s lives. Through funding, legislation and policy initiatives, we help ensure European leadership and independence in critical digital technologies(such as Artificial Intelligence, Common Data Spaces, high-performance computing, 5G, micro-electronics, blockchain and quantum). We work towards making Europe a global leader in the data economy and in cybersecurity. We foster the internal market where all companies can invest and compete on equal terms, develop, market and use digital technologies, products and services and where the rights of creators and consumers are respected. We work on the deployment of very high-speed networks to all companies and households, as connectivity is key for digital transformation. We promote the EU’s human-centric model of an innovative, fair and sustainable digital transformation of society, which respects our democratic values, our fundamental rights and cultural diversity. We help bridge the digital divide by supporting digital literacy and skills of EU citizens. ▬ About the European Commission ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The Commission represents and upholds the interests of the EU as a whole, and is independent of national governments. The European Commission prepares legislation for adoption by the Council (representing the member countries) and the Parliament (representing the citizens). It administers the budget and the policy programmes (agriculture, fisheries, research etc.) in cooperation with authorities in the member countries. The Commission's work is steered by a College of Commissioners, and led by its President. The Commissioners work on specific policy priorities that are set out by the Commission President. ▬ More Videos ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Subscribe to EuropeanCommission: https://bit.ly/2X56Ju6 All European Commission Videos: http://bit.ly/EUCommissionVideos ▬ Follow Us On ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ► Twitter: https://twitter.com/DigitalEU ► Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/digitaleu/ ► Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DigitalEU/ ► Newsletters: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/newsletters ► Check our Website: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en ► Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/digital-eu/

Preparing for Floods: Adapting the Netherlands for Climate Resilience
27 Jan 2023
ESCI - European Scie...
In the IMPETUS project’s ‘Atlantic’ demonstration site in the Netherlands, our main goal is to align with national, regional and local programmes to enhance #climatechange adaptation measures. The team is developing digital #decisionsupportsystem tools for municipal spatial planners, so they can create sustainable cities and communities, with a focus on the city of Rotterdam and surrounding areas in Rijnmond and the province of Zeeland. One of the most significant challenges that climate change presents here is the increasing risk of #flooding from #sealevelrise. The sea has always been a threat for this low-lying country, which has been subject to major flooding events throughout its history. For example, the ‘Watersnoodramp’ of 1953 was a major disaster. And it is expected that, by 2050, regional sea level will rise 15-40 cm and there will be more severe #storms. More intense #rainfall and river flooding is another challenge, as summer floods in much more recent years have reminded us. With growing recognition that the Netherlands’ main protection – sea dikes and storm surge barriers – may no longer be sufficient in the face of climate change, the race is on for Dutch cities to take #climateaction and plan ahead with new strategies. Our #climateimpetus #project partner Nelen & Schuurmans is helping to accelerate climate adaptation measures in the Netherlands with its flooding decision support tool. Wiki systems allow for the structure of content to emerge from the bottom of community effort without prescribing one upfront. Semantic data models generation and curation made “Wiki”, is what SEMIC intends to promote, providing support for models surfacing from community driven effort. In SEMIC terms, the Wiki approach is complementary to that of data models being designed by a small team of selected experts. More information can be found on the Joinup page: https://joinup.ec.europa.eu/collection/semic-support-centre/wikidata-and-wikibase The objective of this workshop was to have an exchange between peers about best practices and working realities in different member states, but also to allow the SEMIC team to assess the variety of data used in everyday practice in order to efficiently prepare the other workshops. The challenges posed by climate change, including extreme flooding, heat waves, droughts etc. significantly alter the types and magnitudes of hazards faced by communities and the emergency management systems at various levels of governments serving them. Accordingly, the demand from governments to address emergency preparedness and response as a core development issue, with a focus on engaging a broader number of institutions is increasing. The Global Program for Emergency Preparedness and Response (EP&R) aims to build government capacities to systematically prepare for and respond to emergencies by establishing legal and institutional frameworks for clear mandates and accountabilities, and investing in personnel, facilities, equipment, and information technology to enhance emergency management systems. The Global Program for EP&R provides technical support to task teams and governments and supports institutionalizing and scaling the World Bank’s engagement in Emergency Preparedness and Response investments by supporting task teams in advocacy, design and implementation of EP&R projects or projects with emergency preparedness components. The program offers two main products: (i) the Lessons Learned Exercise (LLE) as an entry point; and (ii) the Ready2Respond (R2R) diagnostic as an investment planning tool. In addition, the program provides support to teams by connecting regional teams with external expertise and providing operational and technical support. In the scope of the Understanding Risk Forum, the Program proposes to organize a panel discussion with the World Bank task team leaders and clients on the importance of comprehensive EP&R systems. The participants will discuss the importance of multi-agency collaboration, local-level capacity building and community engagements. The panel will discuss and share experiences from the first phase of the program including lessons learned from engagements in the Caribbean and Bangladesh; what teams learned from COVID-19; and how the program can support regional teams and clients moving forward. The panel discussion will be followed up by a Q&A.

Congress has recently made some much-anticipated progress toward advancing a bipartisan privacy bill. The current compromise, the American Data Protection and Privacy Act (ADPPA), still has a long way to go before becoming law, but it represents considerable efforts from both sides of the aisle to come to a consensus on divisive issues that have sunk previous bills. If the ADPPA or similar legislation passes, it would finally provide the United States with a single, comprehensive data privacy law that protects all Americans and simplifies compliance for businesses.Join ITIF for a discussion about the progress Congress has made in crafting bipartisan privacy legislation, the ADPPA’s current legislative status, and the remaining areas of debate regarding the legislation.Speakers:- Rep. The superior modulation bandwidth of laser diodes (LDs) makes them an ideal candidate for transmitters in optical wireless communication (OWC). One of the most important limitations in human-accessible environments is laser safety [1] which limits the transmission power and thereby coverage and range. The average LD power can be increased by means of optical components to reduce the power density or to increase the maximum permissible exposure (MPE). The power density is reduced by increasing the beam diameter and the emission angle 𝜃𝜃e to reduce the impinging optical power onto the human eye. The MPE is the limit value for the laser class defined by IEC 60825-1 [1]. Within certain limits, the MPE is influenced by the wavelength λ and the size of the apparent source. A large apparent source avoids sharp focus points on the retina. On the state’s coastline on the Baltic Sea lie many holiday resorts, unspoilt nature and the islands of Rügen and Usedom, as well as many others. Destroying seagrass meadows hinders the ocean’s ability to mitigate the climate
Yesterday
Seas At Risk
Seagrass meadows play a key role in the fight against climate change. Even though seagrass only covers 0.2% of the seafloor, it silently absorbs 10% of the ocean’s carbon each year, 35 times faster than tropical rainforests. Seagrass meadows also protect coastlines from erosion, as they decrease waves’ strength by up to 75%. Moreover, seagrass meadows host a great diversity of marine life, contributing to keeping the ocean alive. Considering the urgent need for carbon neutrality to meet the Paris Agreement, natural solutions like protecting seagrass meadows should be considered a key climate priority. However, bottom trawling systematically destroys these habitats, whose surface has been largely reduced in the past decades hindering the precious ocean’s precious climate mitigation ability. Bottom trawling is a threat to climate. Banning bottom trawling would unlock the ocean’s full potential to mitigate climate change.

Launch of HesaMag#26 "If people are unhappy at work it’s because they’ve got problems in their personal lives." This is just one of the deep-rooted misconceptions used as an excuse not to take action against psychosocial risks. The list goes on. And take action against them we must. Join us for the launch of the 26th issue of HesaMag, the ETUI’s health and safety magazine, which takes a hard look at the various manifestations of psychosocial risks in European workplaces. Whilst it is possible to predict how much energy can be produced from fossil fuel sources, this is not the case with renewable energy sources and yet energy companies need to know future energy production to trade competitively. In hydropower for instance, generators and utilities typically face up to 30% error when forecasting renewable energy output due to poor data. In comparison, offshore wind project stakeholders need reliable site assessment information in order to assess investment bankability, as well as infrastructure sustainability and climate ;Through a unique combination of satellite imagery with geospatial datasets, AI and cutting-edge machine learning algorithms, Wegaw offers the underlying data driven climate tech solution that supports the energy sectors’ digital transition without the need for additional hardware ;Wegaw empowers industry stakeholders with highly accurate environmental insights that would enable crucial CO2 reductions and bolster national energy security initiatives for a carbon-neutral renewable energy future. Moreover, the energy industry can further close the gap on billions in lost potential revenue caused by productivity and trading edge loss whilst reducing world-wide fossil fuel dependence. The near real-time, cost-effective insights that Wegaw creates can optimize clean energy production efficiencies, boost trading capabilities, and support identification and assessment of new project site locations.By monitoring key environmental variables, such as soil moisture, wave height, snow water equivalent, hydrological flow and wind speed, Wegaw aims to become a go-to data partner for utilities, governments, energy generators, agencies and communities ;Furthermore, by subscribing to Wegaw’s reliable, tailored and scalable datasets, progressive industry innovators are working towards numerous UN SDGs whilst strengthening the ecosystem's digital transition journey.
