Eamon Gilmore is the Tánaiste (deputy prime minister) and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade in the Government of Ireland. He has been a member of the Dáil (the Irish Parliament) since 1989 and leader of the Labour Party of Ireland since 2007. A graduate of University College Galway he was President of the Union of Students of Ireland and was later a trade union organiser before entering local and national politics. At the 2011 general election he led the Labour Party to its best ever performance with a record 37 seats. As Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore is responsible for Ireland’s 2012 Chairmanship of the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe).
