“Covering the Far Right in Europe: Ethics on the line” – an important new debate on how to cover the politics of the Far Right at European level. Date – 29th September 2009, 18.30. Venue – Residence Palace (Maelbeek Room), Rue de la Loi 155, 1040 Brussels.

The European elections have seen a significant jump in the numbers of the Far Right becoming active at EU level in Brussels, both in terms of new MEPS and unelected but sympathetic supporters. How should journalists cover the emergence of this new crew of right-leaning politicos? Should we try and ignore them? Should we openly reject their views. Or should we let them air their views like everyone else in a community with a stated support for free speech? Come along and join in what will be a very lively debate.

Speakers include:

* David Charter, Brussels correspondent of The Times.
* Alberto D’Argenzio, correspondent for Il Manifesto.
* Geert Cool, Spokesperson for Blokbuster, the Vlaams Belang monitoring group.
* Tim Lezard, former President, National Union of Journalists (Britain and Ireland).
* Others tbc.

The debate will be moderated by Aidan White, secretary General of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).

Aidan White will also use the occasion to launch the new IFJ guide to ethical journalism.

Come along early. By 18.30 the room is likely to be full!
